Presented in autumn 2020

Over the past months we have been working out our master plan for the est with Potsdam firm of architects Kühn-von Kaehne und Lange and Berlin project and property management firm Kroschewski Holzrichter. That collaboration produced an extensive document that covers all the aspects involved in converting the former royal school into an innovative European School plus boarding facilities, from the general conditions and construction planning to the costs.

Instead of the around 180 pupils that once attended the old Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium, the new school will offer places to around 450 pupils, including 120 day pupils from the local region. We will have to create new spaces for innovative teaching. Our room plan will be based on the specific needs of European Schools and boarding schools as well as on the current school building recommendations of the States of Berlin and Brandenburg. That means we will add several new buildings to the existing ones:

• • A science and technology centre
  • A new auditorium to seat approx. 500
  • A canteen
  • A two-court gymnasium
  • A quiet room

The existing structures, built to plans by architect Fritz Bräuning in 1910 to 1912, will be extensively renovated section by section and complemented by new buildings that blend harmoniously with their surroundings.

The school will open in reduced form with around 80 pupils in the 2024/2025 academic year.

The total investment in renovations and new construction necessary to allow the school to operate at full capacity with around 450 pupils will be around €97 million (including equipment and furnishings).
