Renovation of the Roofs

In March 2021 we began to restore the roofs of two boarding school buildings (boarding houses V and VI). Half of the funds amounting to € 900,000 were provided by a national programme for the renovation of monuments, and the other half came from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for the Preservation of Monuments), the town of Templin, and private donors. The next construction phases will be financed in three equal parts – from national funding, funding from the state of Brandenburg, and donations raised by our foundation. Again the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz is making a significant contribution.

The first phase of construction enabled us to develop standards for the renovation of further roofs, working with the relevant public administration departments for the preservation of listed buildings, including construction designs for the dormers, the renovation or reconstruction of the historical windows, and the colours of the dormer wings and chimneys. Relevant environmental protection issues were also taken into consideration, as the reconstructed roofs will no longer be accessible for bats and birds and alternative provisions must be made.

The kick-off of the renovation of the roofs in 2021 was hampered by a lack of materials and increasing building costs. The progress of the building was also delayed by staff shortages among the participating businesses, caused by illness and quarantine during the pandemic. Since summer 2023, work on the roofs of the school building has been at full capacity. The striking school tower has been scaffolded. We can hardly wait to see its domed roof in its full splendour.
