Architectural Master Plan
Updated 2022/2023, first version 2020
The est master plan was drafted in 2020. Working with the Potsdam architects Kühn-von Kaehne and Lange and the Berlin planning office Kroschewski Holzrichter, a comprehensive document was produced, as a guide for the transformation of the site into an innovative European school
While the original Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium had a capacity of 180 pupils, the new school will accommodate around 450, with 120 to 150 coming from the region. New visionary buildings are the answer to the future everyday requirements of an innovative school.
The 2020 master plan was based on our framework school concept and contemporary recommendations for the construction of schools in Berlin und Brandenburg. In 2022 and 2023 we adapted the planning and specifics of the rooms and other spaces together with our our team of experts for education and school architecture. The use of the existing buildings will be optimised and modernised, and new buildings will be added to the ensemble, including:
- a research workshop
- a new assembly hall, for c. 500 persons
- a canteen
- a sports’ hall with two playing surfaces
The original buildings were designed and built between 1910 and 1912 by architect Fritz Bräuning. In several construction phases we will carefully and comprehensively renew these buildings. The additional new buildings complement, renew, and complete a school for the future.
The total funds for the full renovation and the construction of the new buildings amount to more than € 100 m. We have secured c. € 65 m for the renovation of the existing buildings, of which over € 50 m is public funds at the national level and from the state of Brandenburg. The remaining € 15 m is from private donations.
We are pleased to provide more detailed information about the status of our planning:
